Nothing gets my musical senses going like a Rick Rubin/Red Hot Chili Peppers recording. I mean, you've got the best "minimalist" producer working with some seriously talented musicians that have serious knowledge of their medium. Mix that up in a studio (i.e. Stadium Arcadium), and you get to hear some seriously delicious tones.
In my obsessive attempts to sound like guitar God John Frusciante, I have been drooling over vintage Stratocasters. He plays a 1962 Stratocaster with a rosewood fretboard that Anthony Keidis gave him (allegedly in attempts to make peace upon Frusicante's return from that nasty-near death sabbatical from the band).
In my opinion, the only ingredient for tonal quality in a guitar is time. Sure , you can go out and drop $10K + on a private stock PRS, but at the end of the day, there will be less character than this beautiful 1954 Stratocaster:
I've been lucky enough to play a vintage Stratocaster recently. It WILL make you sound a little bit closer to God.
Price: Depends on condition of course, but for something like the one in the pic, probably ~$100,000
